Debunk Fact-Checking Criteria
Overview
The criteria compiled here are only designed for an analysis of the claim/statement choosing and checking process. They also aid in rating the claim as True or False or misleading or partially correct, Incorrect, Satire, or Checked among other verdicts based on the evidence provided. Below are the criteria we use to evaluate fact-checks made by Debunk Media:
Categories of Fact-Checks
- Health and Human Rights: Health claims contain information which impacts people’s well-being, not based on current scientific evidence. Human rights claims impact basic freedoms and need to be fact-checked.
- Climate Change: Claims related to climate change hinder progress and increase risks to the environment. We fact-check such claims.
Fact-Checking Criteria
Criteria | Description |
---|---|
One claim per Fact Check | Claims containing multiple propositions should be divided into separate fact-checks, each containing exactly one claim. |
Claims are checked in their immediate context | The context matters in fact-checking, based on the reality represented by the claim at hand, not the surrounding of the speaker. |
Fact-checks are based on evidence | There must be evidence to support fact-checks; fact-checkers should disclose their sources, methodology, and truth-value categories. |
Each claim is checked using the same criteria | Fact-checks should not focus on any one particular side (e.g., party), and the fact-checker should not advocate for policy positions. |
Uncheckable Sentence Types
- Claims about the future and Goal setting (cannot be fact-checked as there is no way to know the future).
- Unclear or vague claims and Claims about non-existent things (e.g., "Artists are childish").
- Claims containing aesthetic, moral or ethical values.
- Claims concerning the supernatural or matters of faith.
- Claims referring to personal experiences.
- Redundancies, Performative sentences, Opinions, Interrogative sentences, Non-declarative exclamatory sentences, Imperative sentences.
